Nippon Mode: PENELOPE’S Celebrated Japanese Avant-Garde

PENELOPE’S Auction House dedicated its first autumn sale to Japanese fashion, shining a spotlight on three visionary maisons: Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, and Issey Miyake. The event, held from September 26 to October 6, 2025, presented 250 remarkable pieces that celebrated experimental fashion and its unique relationship to the human body — fashion that was more conceptual than ornamental.

Japanese fashion of this era was defined by a conceptual, deconstructive approach that challenged Western notions of clothing and beauty. Architectural and sculptural, it turned the human silhouette into a moving construction, while reinterpreting tradition with modern materials. Rejecting ostentation, it became a cult “anti-fashion,” shaping a new elegance and leaving a lasting influence on contemporary design.

At Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo, later joined by Junya Watanabe, pioneered radical deconstruction: asymmetries, visible seams, dissonant volumes. Her dark palette and provocations blurred the line between beauty and ugliness, masculine and feminine, luxury and rawness. Each collection became a manifesto that questioned the very idea of fashion itself.
