Festival du Merveilleux celebrates 30 years of the Pavillons de Bercy
Festival du Merveilleux отмечает 30-летие Pavillons de Bercy
From December 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027, one of Paris’s most enchanting cultural venues will celebrate a milestone anniversary. The Pavillons de Bercy – Musée des Arts Forains turns 30, and its traditional Festival du Merveilleux promises to transform the historic site into a magical world of performances, illuminated streets and extraordinary fairground heritage.
Over three decades, the Pavillons de Bercy have welcomed more than three million visitors from around the world. For the past 16 years, the Festival du Merveilleux has become one of its most anticipated annual events, opening the museum to the public during the festive season in a very different way from an ordinary museum visit.
During the festival, visitors are free to create their own route through five distinctive spaces: the Musée des Arts Forains, Théâtre du Merveilleux, Salons Vénitiens, Magic Mirror and Théâtre de Verdure. Performances take place four times a day in each area, turning the museum into a constantly changing stage where it is impossible to know exactly what awaits around the next corner.
The setting itself is part of the spectacle. Cobblestone streets overgrown with greenery wind between the historic buildings and, during the Christmas season, are covered in lights. With around 60 Christmas trees, more than 400 decorative fir branches, 650 metres of fir garlands and almost two kilometres of lights, the Pavillons de Bercy evoke something between old Paris and Alice in Wonderland.
Behind this fantasy lies a remarkable collection. Since 1996, former wine warehouses in the Bercy district have housed one of the world’s most important private collections of fairground art and entertainment objects dating from 1850 to 1930. Today the museum holds more than 7,000 heritage pieces, with an equally extensive archive of documentation.
But the Musée des Arts Forains was never conceived as a museum of silent objects behind glass. Here, visitors can touch certain exhibits, ride historic attractions and become part of the experience themselves. One of its most spectacular pieces is a velocipede carousel dating from 1897, powered by the participants themselves and capable of reaching a speed of 60 km/h.
This philosophy has made the Pavillons de Bercy something between a museum and a theatre. Over 30 years, around 11,000 artists have performed here and nearly 8,000 events have taken place across its 1.5-hectare site. The museum also has its own art restoration workshop, helping to preserve the extraordinary objects that give the place its character.
The story of the Pavillons de Bercy is inseparable from its creator, Jean Paul Favand, who brought together the collection and developed the idea of presenting heritage through staging, emotion and imagination. Today the institution is directed by his daughter, Clémentine Favand, who grew up surrounded by this extraordinary universe and has made its continuation her own mission.
The anniversary has an additional significance. Since 2024, fairground culture has been included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, giving international recognition to a tradition that the Pavillons de Bercy have spent decades preserving and bringing to life for new generations.
Each edition of the Festival du Merveilleux attracts around 50,000 visitors and brings together some twenty artists and around ten different shows. Yet numbers only tell part of the story. The real appeal lies in the freedom to wander, discover and participate — moving from a historic carousel to a performance, from an illuminated garden to another unexpected scene.
For its 30th anniversary, the Pavillons de Bercy once again reminds Paris that a museum does not necessarily have to ask visitors to stand back and simply observe. Sometimes it can invite them to step inside the story — to play, laugh, ride a century-old carousel and, for a few hours, believe in magic.
