Wings and Tales: Vikram Goyal Brings the World of the Ramayana to London

Wings and Tales:

This October, Indian designer Vikram Goyal will transform a historic Georgian townhouse in London’s Mayfair into an immersive world of mythology, craftsmanship and contemporary design. Running from October 12 to 16, 2026, alongside Frieze and PAD London, Wings and Tales will present Goyal’s new collection of furniture, decorative objects and brocades inspired by nature and the mythical creatures of the Ramayana.

The exhibition is conceived around the idea of the baithak — the traditional Indian drawing room and, more broadly, a place for gathering and conversation. Two rooms will offer contrasting experiences: one intimate and enveloping, filled with rich textures, and another more open and theatrical. Spices, fruit, candles and natural elements will add a sensory dimension to the handcrafted furniture and objects.

The Ramayana becomes the narrative thread running through the collection. Monkeys, crocodiles and vultures appear in metal reliefs, textiles, carpets and decorative objects, each carrying its own symbolic meaning. The Vanaras represent collective effort and bridge-building, crocodiles evoke hidden obstacles and trials of strength, while winged vultures embody loyalty and resistance.

Craftsmanship remains at the heart of Vikram Goyal Studio. Wings and Tales brings together metalwork, weaving, embroidery, pearl marquetry and the studio’s signature repoussé technique — an ancient method in which metal is hammered from the reverse to create intricate reliefs. For the London exhibition, the studio has also explored hand-knotted rugs, mother-of-pearl inlay and handmade brocade upholstery.

Goyal’s visual language moves freely between cultures and centuries: Silk Road textiles, Indian and Ottoman miniatures, 18th-century European furniture, Chinese decorative traditions and French Art Deco all find echoes in the collection. Design historian and curator Glenn Adamson describes this approach as a bridge between past and present, bringing diverse traditions of craft and belief into a harmonious whole. Wings & Tales 2026 _ Vikram Go… Wings and Tales Introduction

For Goyal, however, Wings and Tales is not simply about beautiful objects. At its heart is the idea of storytelling — and a belief that contemporary design can carry memory, history and meaning. Drawing on the Ramayana’s themes of friendship, empathy and compassion, the designer wants to create a space for cultural dialogue at a time when such conversations feel particularly relevant.

Wings and Tales will take place at 7 Grafton Street in Mayfair from October 12 to 16, 2026, from 10 am to 6 pm. The exhibition will also host a series of salon-style conversations dedicated to Indian literature, history, cuisine and design.
