Istanbul: One City, a Thousand Perspectives — an exhibition in the heart of Paris

On October 19 and 20, 2026, the Réfectoire des Cordeliers in Paris hosted Istanbul: One City, a Thousand Perspectives, an exhibition dedicated to the many faces of one of Türkiye’s most fascinating cities. Organised by the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye and curated by Leyla Kara, the project brought Istanbul into the heart of the Latin Quarter, creating a cultural dialogue between two cities shaped by centuries of history.

Few cities lend themselves to so many interpretations as Istanbul. Suspended between Europe and Asia, tradition and modernity, the city has been shaped by empires, religions, cultures and generations of people who have left their mark on its architecture and identity. Formerly Constantinople and once the capital of several empires, Istanbul carries its history not as a distant memory, but as part of its everyday life.

The exhibition’s title — One City, a Thousand Perspectives — reflected precisely this idea. Istanbul cannot be reduced to a familiar postcard image or a collection of historic monuments. Its identity emerges from contrasts: the Bosphorus and the dense rhythm of its streets, centuries-old architecture and contemporary neighbourhoods, monumental landmarks and intimate scenes of daily life.

The city’s location at the crossroads of continents has always defined its character. Different civilisations and cultural traditions have met here over the centuries, creating a complex urban landscape in which traces of the past coexist naturally with the energy of a constantly changing metropolis.

From historic monuments and the shores of the Bosphorus to lively neighbourhoods and contemporary avenues, Istanbul reveals itself differently depending on where one stands — and who is looking. This multiplicity became the central idea of the Paris exhibition, inviting visitors to move beyond a single, familiar image of the city.

A city, after all, is defined not only by architecture and geography. It is also shaped by memories, encounters, personal experiences and individual perceptions. Through this approach, Istanbul: One City, a Thousand Perspectives explored the relationship between the physical city and the countless ways in which it can be experienced and imagined.

The setting added another dimension to the project. Located at 15 rue de l’École de Médecine in Paris’s 6th arrondissement, the historic Réfectoire des Cordeliers provided an architectural backdrop for a story about another city marked by layers of history. In this context, Istanbul was presented not simply as a destination, but as a living cultural landscape whose identity continues to evolve.

Open to the public free of charge over two days, the exhibition offered Parisian visitors an opportunity to rediscover Istanbul through its historical heritage, cultural diversity and contemporary urban identity — and perhaps to understand why a single perspective could never be enough for a city of a thousand faces.
