Schiaparelli Spring/Summer 2027: Going Clear

Schiaparelli Spring/Summer 2027: Going Clear

For Spring/Summer 2027, Daniel Roseberry presented a Schiaparelli collection that asks a surprisingly simple question: what remains when fashion turns down the noise? Titled Going Clear, the new ready-to-wear chapter was unveiled during Paris Fashion Week in the space beneath the Louvre, bringing the surrealist vocabulary of the house into a wardrobe designed not only to be admired, but to be worn.

For Roseberry, “Going Clear” is less about minimalism than clarity of intention. The designer describes a desire to distance himself from the endless cycle of approval, status, gossip and social media that surrounds the fashion industry. Instead, he turns his attention back to the clothes themselves — and to the woman who will eventually wear them.

That shift is particularly important for Schiaparelli. Under Roseberry, the house has become synonymous with spectacular haute couture, sculptural silhouettes and surrealist details made for unforgettable red-carpet moments. Spring/Summer 2027 does not abandon that theatrical identity. Instead, it distils it, translating elements of couture into separates, knitwear, jackets, skirts, dresses and accessories that belong to another part of the same woman’s life.

One of the collection’s central references is the Schiap jacket. Elsa Schiaparelli once transformed jackets into canvases for fantasy, decoration and artistic collaboration. Roseberry revisits that heritage through velvet, satin and elaborate embroidery, allowing the upper half of the silhouette to carry much of the visual drama. A blue velvet Elsa jacket, for example, is covered in black beadwork, sequins and rhinestones and paired with a fluid black silk satin maxi skirt.

Another Elsa jacket, rendered in pink duchesse satin, looks back to a Schiaparelli design from 1948. Velvet appliqué, multicoloured metallic embroidery, sequins and rhinestones transform the historical reference into something unmistakably contemporary. Roseberry is not recreating the archive literally; he is using it as material from which to construct the present.

The collection also develops a more relaxed side of Schiaparelli ready-to-wear. An idea that emerged after Bella Hadid wore Roseberry’s interpretation of Jane Birkin’s famous reversed broderie anglaise dress in Cannes evolved into knitted separates: tops and skirts that preserve the visual idea while making it easier to incorporate into an everyday wardrobe. It is a revealing example of the direction Roseberry is pursuing — not simplifying Schiaparelli, but finding new ways for its fantasy to function beyond couture.

Stretch knit dresses bring another kind of lightness to the collection, their streamlined shapes drawing inspiration from the eveningwear of American designer Geoffrey Beene. Elsewhere, sculptural breastplate elements recall Roseberry’s Fall/Winter 2026/27 haute couture collection, but without repeating its full-scale theatrical effects. Couture becomes a source of ideas rather than a separate universe.

Accessories continue the same process of translation. The house’s familiar keyhole and lips appear in unexpected places — on shoes, bags and collars — while footwear moves closer to everyday life through lower silhouettes: babouches, knitted booties inspired by a style Elsa wore in the late 1930s, mules and reduced versions of Schiaparelli’s totem heel.

Jewellery provides the collection with one of its most playful surrealist notes. Roseberry created a small menagerie of “spirit animals”: horses, dolphins, pigs, dogs, cats and spiders appear as earrings, cuffs and brooches. The idea turns jewellery into a personal choice of character or alter ego — very much in keeping with Schiaparelli’s long fascination with transforming familiar objects and creatures into something strange, witty and desirable.

There is an interesting contradiction at the heart of Going Clear. Schiaparelli remains instantly recognisable — this is still a world of embroidery, surrealist symbols, sculptural gestures and deliberate excess. Yet the collection also feels concerned with precision: deciding which elements are essential and allowing them to carry the identity of a look without overwhelming it.

Perhaps this is the most significant evolution in Schiaparelli’s ready-to-wear. Roseberry is no longer trying to establish a strict border between the extraordinary world of haute couture and the supposedly practical world of ready-to-wear. Instead, he treats them as different expressions of the same identity — the same woman, the same imagination, simply adapted to different moments.

Going Clear does not make Schiaparelli quiet. That would hardly be possible for a house built on surrealism and provocation. But Spring/Summer 2027 shows another way of being unmistakably Schiaparelli: less dependent on spectacle, more focused on the garment itself, and still capable of making the familiar feel wonderfully strange.
