Costume Art at the Met: when fashion and art share the same space
Costume Art at the Met: when fashion and art share the same space
Costume Art
by Cyril Magne
In 2026, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York places fashion at the heart of its cultural conversation with Costume Art, an exhibition that challenges the traditional separation between clothing and fine art. Conceived by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton, the project invites visitors to consider fashion not as a decorative addition to art history, but as another powerful way of understanding the human body.
The exhibition is deliberately immersive. Sculptor Samar Hejazi created smooth, reflective heads for its mannequins, allowing visitors to catch glimpses of themselves among the exhibits. The effect transforms observation into participation: instead of simply looking at clothes and artworks, viewers are subtly drawn into the narrative themselves.
The human body at the centre
At the core of Bolton’s concept is the body in all its complexity and diversity. Rather than relying on conventional mannequins shaped according to idealised proportions, Costume Art introduces different body types inspired by real people. This approach questions the standards that museums and fashion have historically helped to reinforce.
The timing feels particularly relevant. A decade after Manus x Machina explored the relationship between craftsmanship and technology, Bolton turns his attention back to physical presence. In an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, screens and digital imagery, Costume Art celebrates materiality, touch and the imperfect reality of the human form.
Fashion enters the museum on equal terms
Fashion has not always been granted the same cultural status as painting or sculpture. Its association with femininity, appearance and the body often led to it being dismissed as something temporary or superficial. Costume Art deliberately challenges that hierarchy, placing garments in direct conversation with objects from across the Met’s collections.
This time, the familiar relationship between fashion and art is reversed. Instead of using art to explain clothing, the exhibition proposes looking at art through fashion. Garments, paintings and sculptures coexist without one being treated as more intellectually significant than another.
This dialogue becomes particularly striking when contemporary fashion is placed alongside classical sculpture. Designs by Glenn Martens for Y/Project and Jean Paul Gaultier, for example, appear within a wider exploration of the naked and clothed body, allowing silhouettes created centuries apart to enter the same visual conversation.
A new chapter for the Costume Institute
Costume Art also marks an important institutional moment. The Costume Institute moves into the new permanent Condé M. Nast Galleries near the museum’s Great Hall, giving fashion a more prominent physical presence within the Met and allowing exhibitions to remain open for longer periods.
The growing prominence of fashion within museums reflects a broader cultural shift. Costume Institute exhibitions have become some of the Met’s greatest public successes, with Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, presented in 2018, remaining one of the institution’s landmark exhibitions in terms of attendance.
Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
Beyond the ideal body
Costume Art develops its narrative through contrasting ideas and different interpretations of the body. One part of the exhibition focuses on physical diversity, including pregnant bodies, larger bodies and people with disabilities. Another examines universal experiences connected to anatomy, ageing and mortality.
This perspective changes the role of clothing within the museum. A garment is no longer simply an object admired for its construction, rarity or beauty. It becomes evidence of how societies have perceived, celebrated, controlled and sometimes excluded different bodies throughout history.
Ultimately, Costume Art is less about proving that fashion deserves to be called art than about questioning why the two were separated in the first place. By bringing garments, bodies, paintings and sculptures together, the Met proposes a broader understanding of visual culture — one in which what we wear can reveal as much about humanity as what we choose to place on a museum pedestal.
