Riyadh Art Announces Tuwaiq Sculpture 2027: Where Art Takes Root
Riyadh Art has announced the curatorial team and theme for Tuwaiq Sculpture 2027, the eighth edition of its internationally acclaimed sculpture symposium. Returning to Riyadh in January 2027, the program will unfold under the theme Where Roots Run Deep, bringing together artists from Saudi Arabia and around the world to create monumental works in the heart of the capital.
The 2027 edition will be curated by Dr. Soha AlZaid, Aldo Rinaldi and Auronda Scalera, three guest curators whose expertise spans sculpture, public art and contemporary artistic practice. Together, they will oversee the selection of participating artists and shape the artistic direction of the three-week symposium.
Where Roots Run Deep
At the heart of the new edition is the theme Where Roots Run Deep, an exploration of how places are shaped not only by what is visible on the surface, but also by accumulated layers of history, memory and lived experience. Riyadh provides a particularly resonant setting for this idea: a city deeply connected to its land, culture, heritage and people, while simultaneously undergoing a remarkable transformation.
As a flagship event of Riyadh Art, Tuwaiq Sculpture forms part of a wider vision to integrate public art into the urban landscape and make creativity an integral part of everyday life. Riyadh Art itself is one of four major projects launched in 2019 by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, following an initiative by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Sculpture Created Before the Public’s Eyes
One of Tuwaiq Sculpture’s defining features is its openness. In January, 20 selected artists will work in Riyadh for three weeks, creating their sculptures in full view of residents and visitors. The public will be able to witness how raw materials are transformed into large-scale artworks and observe the creative process from its earliest stages to completion.
“Tuwaiq Sculpture is distinctive in the way it opens the creative process to the public,” says Sarah Alruwayti, Director of Tuwaiq Sculpture at the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. By bringing artists together to work side by side in an open environment, the symposium turns each sculpture into a shared experience and strengthens the relationship between the city and art.
At the end of the symposium, the completed sculptures will be presented in an exhibition before becoming part of Riyadh itself. The works will subsequently be permanently installed in public spaces across the Saudi capital, extending the life of the project far beyond the event.
Open Call for Artists
Alongside the announcement of the curatorial team, Riyadh Art has launched an international Open Call for Tuwaiq Sculpture 2027. Applications are being accepted from October 18 through November 8, 2026, inviting professional artists from Saudi Arabia and around the world to propose works responding to the theme Where Roots Run Deep.
Tuwaiq Sculpture 2027. From Saudi Granite to Contemporary Experimentation
The material palette for the 2027 edition will include granite, metal, breeze blocks or plain blocks, mosaic, cement and cast stone. Artists selected to work with stone will have access to Saudi-sourced granite in three distinctive colors — Royal Gold, Royal Rose and Green — opening new possibilities for contemporary interpretations of traditional materials.
Selected participants will receive an honorarium, as well as full travel and accommodation support. Beyond creating their own works, artists will also become part of the symposium’s broader cultural and educational program.
Tuwaiq Sculpture will once again engage the local community through school and university visits, practical workshops and panel discussions with specialists in art, sculpture and urbanism. Participating artists will be able to share their expertise directly with audiences, encouraging a deeper understanding of contemporary sculpture and public art.
A Lasting Mark on Riyadh
Since its inception, Tuwaiq Sculpture has welcomed more than 145 artists from 56 countries. Their works have gradually entered Riyadh’s public landscape, with 62 sculptures created through the symposium already permanently installed throughout the city.
Through this evolving collection, Tuwaiq Sculpture is not simply producing individual artworks — it is contributing to a new visual identity for Riyadh. By bringing international and Saudi artists into direct dialogue with the city, its landscape and its communities, the symposium continues to transform the urban environment while strengthening Riyadh’s position as an international center for creativity, cultural exchange and artistic innovation.
