Paris is slowly returning to its familiar rhythm after the demonstrations and unrest that swept through the French capital over the weekend. But on the Champs-Élysées and the surrounding streets, the traces of recent events are still impossible to miss. Storefronts are covered with metal grilles, windows are hidden behind protective panels, and some entrances remain barricaded.
Style of Eurasia correspondent Lale walked through central Paris with her camera, documenting how one of the world’s most famous luxury districts looks in the aftermath. Her photographs capture an unusual side of the city — elegant façades and legendary addresses suddenly transformed by steel, plywood and temporary barriers.
The precautions were not without reason. Ahead of the October 17 mobilisation, businesses around the Champs-Élysées, Madeleine and Saint-Lazare began reinforcing their storefronts in anticipation of possible violence. The demonstrations later escalated into serious unrest in several areas of Paris, with shops vandalised and looted.
Luxury under protection
The contrast is particularly striking around the city’s luxury boutiques. Tissot is framed by a striking red protective structure, while Mauboussin is concealed behind metal mesh. Loewe, Celine and Dior have also protected parts of their façades and windows. Even in the city where the boutique window is traditionally part of fashion’s spectacle, for the moment security has taken precedence over display.
The nearby streets tell the same story. Some businesses are almost completely hidden behind temporary coverings, while the PSG store appears behind large plywood panels. Elsewhere, traces of hurriedly installed protection remain visible — a striking contrast to the polished image normally associated with this part of Paris.
The aftermath has been felt well beyond the Champs-Élysées. French media reported extensive damage to businesses across the capital, while Avenue Montaigne — only a short distance away — was among the luxury shopping areas affected. On October 18, workers were already securing damaged storefronts there, including those of major fashion houses.
Another face of Paris
There is something almost surreal about these images. The architecture is the same, the famous names remain above the doors, pedestrians continue along the avenues — yet the visual language of luxury has temporarily changed. Glass, light and carefully composed window displays have given way to mesh, metal and wood.
Paris continues to live, shop and welcome visitors. Yet Lale’s photographs preserve a very particular moment in the life of the French capital: the morning-after atmosphere of a city recovering from unrest, when the Champs-Élysées — usually a showcase of fashion, jewellery and luxury — looks unexpectedly guarded and vulnerable.
