On November 13, 14 and 15, Les Bonnes (The Maids), based on Jean Genet’s celebrated 1947 play, will premiere in a new production directed by Vasily Popov. A story of two sisters, one Madame and a planned murder becomes an intense exploration of power, dependence and desire.
Claire and Solange are sisters and maids. Their Madame is kind to them, caring for them almost as tenderly as for her finest flowers. Yet the sisters are plotting her death. Behind this seemingly inexplicable cruelty lies a world of humiliation, fantasy, resentment and suppressed emotions.
Night after night, the sisters escape into a dangerous game in which identities shift and reality becomes increasingly unstable. They imagine the crime, savour its details and move ever closer to the point where performance may become reality.
In Les Bonnes, tenderness turns into violence, beauty becomes grotesque and farce slips almost imperceptibly into tragedy. Vasily Popov’s production poses the question at the heart of Genet’s disturbing world: can someone who has never known true freedom genuinely know how to love?
The play was inspired by real events, adding another unsettling dimension to a story in which victim and executioner, affection and hatred, submission and rebellion constantly change places.
The production stars Anastasia Naizabekova, Alexandra Devaeva and Kamilla Rakhim. Set and visual design are by Yaroslav Maksimenko, with music by Danila Bykovsky.
