Kazakhstan Fashion Week: 24
By Alina Sarsenova
On October 27 and 28, Almaty hosted the 39th season of Kazakhstan Fashion Week — the country’s first national fashion week and a project whose history is inseparable from the development of Kazakhstan’s fashion industry itself. For 24 years, KFW has provided a professional platform for designers, media and the creative community, introducing more than 750 collections and bringing together designers from 41 countries.
The significance of Kazakhstan Fashion Week lies not only in its longevity. Over more than two decades, the project has witnessed the emergence and evolution of contemporary Kazakh fashion, while its runway has become associated with designers who helped shape the country’s distinctive fashion language. Among them are Alexey Chzhen, Yerlan Zholdasbek and Aida Kaumenova — established names whose creative careers form an important part of Kazakhstan’s fashion history.
The 39th season once again demonstrated this continuity between generations. Alongside established designers, the runway featured younger brands and new names, revealing how differently contemporary Kazakh fashion approaches cultural heritage, craftsmanship, identity, form and experimentation.
Alexey Chzhen focused on the expressive qualities of fabrics and textures. Handwork, embroidery and distinctive details became integral elements of contemporary silhouettes, allowing the material itself to play a central role in the artistic concept of the collection.
Yerlan Zholdasbek brought together Eastern aesthetics, Western dynamics and meticulous craftsmanship. Natural fabrics, embroidery, relaxed silhouettes and layering created a dialogue between ethnic references, hippie influences and grunge — a combination characteristic of the designer’s individual vision.
A particularly symbolic moment of the season was the 20th anniversary of the Aida Kaumenova fashion house. For her anniversary collection, the designer turned to the historical imagery of the Great Steppe and its cultural heritage. At the centre of the story was Aru Sultan, a young woman of the Steppe whose image embodied the idea of preserving one’s roots while remaining open to the world. A specially developed jacquard and headpieces inspired by the goddess Umai strengthened the collection’s connection to Kazakhstan’s cultural memory.
The runway also reflected the diversity of the country’s current fashion scene. KARLAKOSBY explored identity through images of the Kazakh steppe, ethnic motifs, bohemian references and traditional craft techniques. NAQYSH continued its dialogue with national heritage by integrating ornaments and traditional silhouettes into contemporary structured forms, while MADALI turned to the Kazakh folk tale Qyryq Ötirik, translating its absurdity, exaggeration and fantasy into modern fashion.
The season was not limited to Kazakhstan. International designers have long been part of the KFW story, and the 39th edition continued this tradition with participants from Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Their presence turned the runway into a meeting point for different cultural perspectives and design schools.
Anna Grigorieva’s GA GRIGORIEVA ANNA STUDIO from Russia combined Siberian cultural heritage and traditional craft with contemporary fashion design. Russian brand MUTE presented an experimental take on urban clothing, while JENYABER dedicated its collection to Yves Saint Laurent, interpreting his legacy through sharp lines, deep blue and black tones, cobalt accents and the symbolic image of a red rose. 8HUGS explored the possibilities of a transformable wardrobe.
Central Asian fashion was represented by Nazar Almazbekov and ZALKAR from Kyrgyzstan, while Suhrob Habib from Uzbekistan presented a collection inspired by his travels through Italy, combining classic tailoring, minimal silhouettes and a restrained pastel palette.
Beyond the runway, Kazakhstan Fashion Week continued the conversation through a series of Public Talks. The programme addressed fashion history, new technologies, artificial intelligence, international collaboration and the development of Kazakh brands. One of the discussions also brought a personal historical dimension to the season, as Sayat Dossybayev shared memories of encounters with legendary figures of international fashion, including Yves Saint Laurent.
After 24 years and 39 seasons, Kazakhstan Fashion Week is more than a sequence of runway shows. As the first fashion week created in Kazakhstan, it has become part of the country’s fashion history — a platform where the masters who helped establish the industry continue to meet a new generation, and where national identity exists in constant dialogue with the international fashion world.
