From 9 May to 8 June 2026, One Ocean Foundation and ZEITGEIST19 present As Above, So Below, a landmark group exhibition and interdisciplinary research project, a Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by Elizabeth Zhivkova and Farah Piriye Coene, the exhibition takes place in the former Church of Santi Cosma e Damiano on the island of Giudecca in Venice.

At a moment of accelerating ecological instability, As Above, So Below positions the ocean not as a distant abstraction but as a living system through which planetary transformation becomes perceptible. The exhibition approaches the sea as an active archive — a generative force that records deep time, sustains biodiversity, and reflects the fragile balance between technological acceleration and ecological limits. By transforming the sacred architecture of the former church into a space for contemporary contemplation, the curators highlight the urgent need for a transdisciplinary approach to the world’s most vital ecosystems.
В момент нарастающей экологической нестабильности As above, so below предлагает рассматривать океан не как далёкую абстракцию, а как живую систему, через которую становится ощутимым глобальное преобразование планеты. Выставка обращается к морю как к активному архиву — порождающей силе, фиксирующей глубинное время, поддерживающей биоразнообразие и отражающей хрупкое равновесие между технологическим ускорением и экологическими пределами. Превращая сакральную архитектуру бывшей церкви в пространство современного размышления, кураторы подчёркивают необходимость междисциплинарного подхода к исследованию важнейших экосистем планеты.

Drawing on the Hermetic principle of correspondence, As Above, So Below investigates the radical interdependence between cosmos and Earth, atmosphere and abyss, human and more-than-human life. As celestial movements govern tides, the condition of the ocean emerges as a sensitive indicator of planetary imbalance. The project unfolds within the former Church of Santi Cosma e Damiano on Giudecca, now home to Fabbrica H3, where scientific observation, cultural memory and layered histories intersect. Through the integration of sound, light and computational systems, the historic architecture becomes an immersive environment for resonance, ecological reflection and deep listening.

С помощью звука, света и вычислительных систем историческая архитектура превращается в иммерсивную среду для резонанса, экологического размышления и глубокого слушания.

The Collateral Event As Above, So Below brings together seven international artists and collectives: Marshmallow Laser Feast, Yoko Shimizu, Antoine Bertin, Almagul Menlibayeva with Suad Gara, Andrea Crespi, Elnara Nasirli and Orkhan Mammadov. Their practices span immersive installations, sound, moving image and artificial intelligence, forming a collective inquiry across art, science and technology.
Параллельное событие As above, so below объединяет семь международных художников и коллективов: Marshmallow Laser Feast, Yoko Shimizu, Antoine Bertin, Almagul Menlibayeva совместно с Suad Gara, Andrea Crespi, Elnara Nasirli и Orkhan Mammadov. Их практики охватывают иммерсивные инсталляции, звук, движущееся изображение и искусственный интеллект, формируя коллективное исследование на пересечении искусства, науки и технологий.

Marshmallow Laser Feast present an immersive audiovisual installation shaped by whale vocalisations and bioacoustic research, inviting audiences into the sensory world of cetaceans and reflecting on communication and navigation beyond the human. Antoine Bertin’s Fish String Theory explores submerged marine intelligences through the acoustic landscapes of the Venetian lagoon and the mysterious sound of the Mediterranean stonefish. The work was developed through a residency initiated by One Ocean Foundation and ZEITGEIST19 and further research at Auckland University of Technology.
Marshmallow Laser Feast представляют иммерсивную аудиовизуальную инсталляцию, основанную на вокализациях китов и биоакустических исследованиях, погружая зрителя в чувственный мир китообразных и предлагая размышление о формах коммуникации и навигации, выходящих за пределы человеческого опыта. Работа Antoine Bertin Fish String Theory исследует скрытые формы морского интеллекта через акустические ландшафты Венецианской лагуны и загадочный звук средиземноморской рыбы-камня. Yoko Shimizu presents an installation inspired by bioluminescence, developed during an As Above, So Below research residency aboard a scientific vessel. The work draws on plankton as a fragile indicator of planetary balance and ecological interdependence. Meanwhile, Almagul Menlibayeva, with contributions by Suad Gara and an original score by Reinhold Heil, presents Water Older Than the Sun (Caspian), a multimedia installation addressing the ecological collapse of the Caspian Sea, accompanied by the documentary film Requiem for the Caspian.
Yoko Shimizu представляет инсталляцию, вдохновлённую биолюминесценцией и созданную во время исследовательской резиденции As above, so below на научном судне. В центре работы — планктон как хрупкий индикатор планетарного баланса и экологической взаимосвязи. В свою очередь, Almagul Menlibayeva при участии Suad Gara и с оригинальной музыкой Reinhold Heil представляет мультимедийную инсталляцию Water Older Than the Sun (Caspian), посвящённую экологической катастрофе Каспийского моря и сопровождаемую документальным фильмом Requiem for the Caspian.

In two newly commissioned works, Andrea Crespi presents a holographic vitrine that evokes the mythological figure Thetis within a primordial jellyfish, creating a perceptual threshold between natural data and archetypal myth. Orkhan Mammadov employs artificial intelligence to map fungal networks above and below the soil, making underground ecological dialogue visible.
В двух новых работах, созданных специально для проекта, Andrea Crespi представляет голографическую витрину, в которой образ Фетиды возникает внутри первозданной медузы, формируя границу восприятия между природными данными и мифологическими архетипами. Orkhan Mammadov использует искусственный интеллект для картирования грибных сетей над и под поверхностью почвы, делая видимым скрытый подземный диалог экосистем.

Elnara Nasirli’s Whispering Forest grounds the exhibition in terrestrial intelligence, translating the bioelectric signals of an olive tree into sound through human touch and foregrounding reciprocal relationships between bodies and ecosystems.

The exhibition will conclude on 8 June 2026, coinciding with World Oceans Day, reinforcing the connection between the curatorial vision and global environmental commitment.
