Kirill Gasilin: Remembering a Visionary Designer Born in Kazakhstan

Kirill Gasilin: Remembering a Visionary Designer Born in Kazakhstan

The fashion world has lost a remarkable creative talent. Kirill Gasilin, the Russian fashion designer, costume artist and founder of the Cyrille Gassiline label, passed away in Moscow on October 4, 2026, at the age of 47, following a battle with cancer. Born in Kazakhstan, he devoted his life to fashion, theatre, ballet and the preservation of historical costume, leaving behind an artistic legacy that extended far beyond the runway.

From Kazakhstan to the World of Haute Couture

Kirill Gasilin was born on December 8, 1978, in Kazakhstan. His professional journey took him to St Petersburg and Kharkiv, where he studied before establishing himself in the fashion industry. An important early achievement was winning the Grand Prix at Alexander Vasiliev’s Volga Seasons fashion competition. He subsequently worked at the Moscow fashion house Anna Rossa, gaining valuable experience in the world of professional design.

A defining chapter in his career unfolded in Paris, where Gasilin trained at the haute couture house of Dominique Sirop, who had worked alongside the legendary Hubert de Givenchy. Immersion in the traditions of French couture helped him refine his understanding of construction, proportion, fabric and the intricate craftsmanship behind exceptional garments.

In 2007, he established his own fashion label, Cyrille Gassiline. His designs became known for their distinctive silhouettes, sophisticated colour palettes and thoughtful approach to construction. Gasilin believed that clothing should combine artistic expression with comfort and practicality. Pieces from his collections would eventually enter the prestigious State Hermitage Museum.

Two Decades of Friendship and Creativity with Alexandre Vasiliev

One of the most important relationships in Gasilin’s professional and personal life was his friendship with internationally renowned fashion historian Alexandre Vasiliev. For more than twenty years, the two worked closely together on exhibitions, historical costume collections and cultural projects.

In a deeply personal tribute, Alexandre Vasiliev recalled:

“We were born on the same day, December 8, and worked side by side for more than twenty years.”

He remembered Gasilin as an exceptionally gifted artist whose creative world embraced form, colour, texture and cut, as well as a profound love of life, art and ballet.

For many years, Gasilin worked with the Alexandre Vasiliev Foundation, contributing to the preservation and presentation of historical fashion. His expertise helped bring major exhibitions to life at Tsaritsyno, GUM, the Museum of Moscow, the State Museum of Oriental Art and the Pushkin Museum, as well as at Vitebsky Railway Station in St Petersburg.

His exhibition work also reached international audiences, with projects presented at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, as well as in Riga and Vilnius. He contributed to exhibitions in Vladivostok and Novosibirsk, demonstrating an exceptional ability to transform historical costume collections into compelling cultural narratives.

A Creative Legacy Beyond Fashion

Theatre and ballet occupied a special place in Gasilin’s artistic life. As a costume designer, he contributed to productions in Moscow, Astrakhan, Tbilisi and Tallinn. His work included costumes for My Fair Lady, La Bayadère and the Tokyo National Ballet’s production of The Afternoon of a Faun and His Nymph.

Even during the final months of his life, Gasilin continued to create. In May 2026, he worked on a production of Swan Lake featuring celebrated ballerina Nina Ananiashvili in Tbilisi. He also contributed to numerous catalogues documenting the Alexandre Vasiliev Foundation’s collections, helping preserve the history of fashion for future generations.

Beyond his extraordinary professional achievements, those who knew him remember a man of refined artistic taste, generosity and unwavering loyalty. He loved fashion, ballet, animals and, above all, the creative process itself. Alexandre Vasiliev described him as a devoted friend who stood for truth and justice and remained committed to his art until the very end.

In his farewell message, Alexandre Vasiliev expressed a grief that words could scarcely contain, remembering Gasilin as a beautiful, noble and extraordinarily talented creator whose absence would always be felt.

Kirill Gasilin leaves behind a legacy woven into the history of contemporary fashion, museum exhibitions and theatrical art. From Kazakhstan to Paris, from the runway to the ballet stage, his creative journey was defined by an enduring belief in beauty and the transformative power of art.

His work will remain. And so will the memory of an artist who devoted his life to creating beauty.
