Home Begins with Care: A Charity Volunteer Day at the COMES Animal Shelter

On October 11, 2026, the COMES animal shelter in the Almaty Region hosted a charity volunteer day dedicated to World Animal Day, observed annually on October 4. Volunteers, journalists, bloggers and company employees came together to help clean the shelter, meet its residents and support the people for whom rescuing animals has become an everyday commitment.

COMES was founded in 2018 by siblings Yulia and Sergey Snegirev. Today, the shelter is home to more than 400 animals. Alongside dogs and cats, its residents have recently come to include a horse, a donkey and goats. Each of them has a story of their own, while behind the shelter’s daily work lies an ongoing commitment to feeding, treatment, safety and the rehabilitation of animals that have experienced trauma or lost their homes.

The volunteer day offered guests an opportunity to see this work from the inside. They met the animals, learned their stories, helped tidy the shelter grounds and spent time with its residents. For the COMES team, such gatherings are also a chance to draw attention to needs that are not always visible from the outside — from everyday supplies to veterinary expenses and preparations for the winter months.

Almost every week, Yulia rescues dogs from municipal animal control facilities, many of them in serious condition and in urgent need of medical attention. But rescue work is by no means limited to dogs. Recently, the team took in a kitten suffering from severe eye injuries. The animal is currently receiving treatment at a veterinary clinic. Cases like these require immediate decisions, followed by time, financial resources and continuous care.

Finding permanent homes for the shelter’s residents is another essential part of COMES’ mission. Treatment and rehabilitation help animals recover, but the ultimate goal is to find someone willing to care for them for the rest of their lives. Sometimes that journey leads far beyond Kazakhstan.

“Our animals find homes not only in Kazakhstan. Right now, we are preparing a puppy for a journey abroad, where its new family is already waiting. We have reached a preliminary agreement with the airline and are now looking for someone who could accompany the puppy. What matters most to us is making sure the journey to its new home is safe. There is a great deal of organisation behind such a move, but the most important thing is that the puppy already has people ready to welcome and care for it,” said COMES co-founder Yulia Snegireva.

Stories like this reveal just how many stages an animal goes through on the way to a new home: rescue, medical examinations, treatment, rehabilitation and, finally, meeting a future family. Support is needed at every step, and there are many ways to provide it — from volunteering at the shelter to helping with transportation or covering veterinary expenses.

The charity day itself became an example of how different forms of support can come together. Purina organised transportation for journalists and bloggers, donated products for the animals, and its employees joined the volunteers working at the shelter. Fix Price provided products for cats, BETA Tea contributed tea for the gathering, while SAMAL supplied drinking water for participants.

“I am deeply grateful to everyone who responded and came today. Special thanks go to Purina for organising transportation for the media and bloggers, providing products for the animals and joining us in the work at the shelter. Fix Price donated products for the cats, BETA Tea provided tea for our gathering, and SAMAL supplied drinking water. It means a great deal to us that everyone found their own way to contribute. It turned into a wonderfully warm day, with time for work, conversation and, most importantly, attention to the animals,” Yulia Snegireva shared.

After the work was done, participants gathered for tea, giving them an opportunity to speak with the shelter team, ask questions, discuss future involvement and gain a deeper understanding of what caring for hundreds of animals truly requires every single day.

As the colder months approach, COMES faces an even greater challenge: preparing its facilities and animals for winter. The shelter is in constant need of food, veterinary funding, household supplies and volunteers. Yet support does not always have to be financial. Sharing the story of an animal looking for a family or simply spreading information about the shelter’s current needs can also make a meaningful difference.

“It is incredibly important for us to know that there are people who care about the lives of our animals. Some can come and help in person, others can bring food, contribute towards treatment or simply tell others about an animal that needs a family. Everyone has different possibilities, and we are grateful for every form of support. It is precisely this help that allows us to continue caring for the animals already living at the shelter and to rescue those who still need us,” Yulia Snegireva emphasised.

World Animal Day may have been the occasion that brought everyone together, but the meaning of the day reaches far beyond a single event. For some, a first visit to COMES may become the beginning of regular volunteering. For others, it may be the first step towards welcoming a shelter animal into their family.
