The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris is presenting The Histories, the first exhibition in France devoted to acclaimed American artist Kerry James Marshall. Running from September 18, 2026 to January 24, 2027, the major retrospective brings together 70 works spanning more than four decades of the artist’s career, including eight new paintings created especially for the exhibition.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955, Kerry James Marshall is regarded as one of the most influential painters of his generation. His monumental compositions place Black figures at the centre of the image, transforming scenes of everyday life into works of almost epic scale and significance. In doing so, Marshall engages with the history of Western painting while questioning who has traditionally been represented within it — and who has remained absent.

Rewriting the Visual History of Art

Marshall’s art is built upon a remarkable dialogue between tradition and contemporary culture. His visual language draws on the Western art-historical canon, particularly nineteenth-century French painting, while also incorporating references to Afro-futurism, comic books, science fiction and contemporary popular culture.

At the heart of his practice is the representation of Black life on a scale historically associated with grand history painting. Beauty salons, parks, domestic interiors and seemingly ordinary moments become part of a much larger visual narrative. Through these images, Marshall does not simply add new figures to familiar artistic traditions; he reconsiders the traditions themselves.

The exhibition also addresses some of the defining chapters of Black history, from the forced transatlantic passage of enslaved Africans to the legacy of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Yet Marshall approaches these subjects without directly depicting violence or alienation, choosing instead to explore history through presence, symbolism and the visual power of his protagonists.

More Than Four Decades of Art

Created with the artist’s support, The Histories traces Marshall’s career from the 1980s to the present day. Painting remains at the heart of the exhibition, accompanied by drawings, prints and sculpture. The works have been brought together from museum and private collections across Europe and North America.

Among the works that embody Marshall’s artistic language is School of Beauty, School of Culture from 2012. Set in a lively beauty salon, the painting transforms an everyday social space into an ambitious composition filled with art-historical references, reflections and visual clues — demonstrating the artist’s ability to connect contemporary Black life with centuries of painting.

Eight New Paintings Created for The Histories

One of the most significant aspects of the exhibition is the inclusion of eight new paintings created specifically for The Histories. Rather than simply looking back at Marshall’s career, the retrospective therefore becomes a living continuation of his artistic practice, adding an entirely new chapter to the story.

The exhibition was originated by the Royal Academy of Arts in London in collaboration with Kunsthaus Zürich before arriving in Paris. Its presentation at the Musée d’Art Moderne continues the museum’s history of major monographic exhibitions dedicated to Black American artists, following landmark projects devoted to Kara Walker in 2007 and Jean-Michel Basquiat in 2010.

The exhibition Kerry James Marshall: The Histories is on view at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, 11 Avenue du Président Wilson, from September 18, 2026 to January 24, 2027. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with late-night opening on Thursdays until 9:30 p.m.
