When night falls, everything is shrouded in mystery, and emotions take on a heightened intensity. As early as 1665, with the installation of its very first public street lighting, Paris began to tame these nocturnal hours. Photographers were quickly captivated by the vibrant energy of the "City of Light," a fascination that intensified after 1844 with the advent of electric illumination. The true subject here is not a dark, ink-black Paris, but rather its countless constellations of light.

The exhibition chronicles the period from 1900 to 1970, capturing a city that occasionally feels entirely deserted when lingering on certain iconic landmarks: the Eiffel Tower during the 1925 Exposition (by Jacques Boyer), metro exits, the Place Vendôme column (by Jack Nisberg), and Notre-Dame de Paris. It also highlights the Place de la Concorde (by André Vigneau) and grand department stores, such as the Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville (by Jacques Boyer).

Simultaneously, the collection portrays a city bustling with activity: the vibrant markets of Les Halles, lively restaurants, legendary cabarets—featuring the French Cancan at the Casino de Paris (by Gaston Paris) or rehearsals at the Folies Bergère—and grand celebrations, such as the arrival at a masquerade ball at the Opéra (by Maurice-Louis Branger). The timeless charm of these prints is beautifully enhanced by the almost exclusive use of black and white photography.
