Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons: An Iconic Archive Goes to Auction

On October 1st, 2025, during Paris Fashion Week, the auction house PIASA will unveil one of the most significant private collections ever assembled around the work of Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo and her iconic brand Comme des Garçons.

Comme des Garçons.

Curated over the last ten years by Japanese collector Hiroaki Narita, this anthology of over 500 pieces spans three decades, from 1969 to 1999. It features highlights from landmark collections such as Pirates (1981), Noir (1988), Metamorphosis (1994), and the unforgettable Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body (1997).

Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body (1997).

Each lot tells a story of experimentation, deconstruction, and radical beauty. Estimates range from €150 to €3,000, making the sale accessible to both seasoned collectors and new admirers of Kawakubo’s visionary work.

A portion of the collection will be displayed to the public at PIASA’s exhibition space on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, from September 26 to 30, ahead of the live auction on October 1.

Comme des Garçons was founded in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo, a designer whose rebellious spirit redefined fashion from the inside out. The brand’s name, taken from the Françoise Hardy song Tous les garçons et les filles, foreshadowed a poetic vision rooted in contradiction and innovation.

Despite a polarizing reception at its first Paris show in 1981, Comme des Garçons quickly ascended to global cult status, challenging conventions with every collection. Kawakubo’s stark use of black, unconventional silhouettes, and philosophical approach to clothing made waves across generations.

In 2017, Kawakubo’s career was honored with a major retrospective at New York’s Metropolitan Museum, further cementing her place among the greats. Comme des Garçons remains fully independent and family-owned, thriving at the intersection of couture and streetwear.

Beyond clothing, Kawakubo’s influence resonates in retail concepts like Dover Street Market, in artistic collaborations, and now — through this historic sale that honors the rebellious, unclassifiable spirit of Comme des Garçons.

Comme des Garçons.

The auction is a tribute not only to fashion history but to the deep devotion of collector Hiroaki Narita, whose son Simon, at just 15, photographed the entire catalogue — bringing a new generation’s lens to a timeless legacy.
