Louvre Couture: Art Objects, Fashion Objects

Louvre Couture: Art Objects, Fashion Objects

Louvre Couture:

By Claude Lisbona

A journey through imagination and creativity, across time and cultures—this is what guided Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747–1825) when organizing the Louvre Museum. Today, it remains an immense “mood board” for artists, especially for couturiers. From Cristóbal Balenciaga to Iris van Herpen, no major fashion designer has missed the chance to wander its grand halls in search of inspiration.

The Decorative Arts Department as a Treasury of Motifs

The Decorative Arts Department resembles a vast repertoire, showcasing 8,500 works rich in ornamental details. Sometimes, designers borrow motifs in an almost literal manner: Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel 2019 collection reproduced the exact design of an 18th-century commode with Martin varnish in Lesage embroidery on a jacket. Similarly, Hubert de Givenchy’s 1990–91 collection drew inspiration from André-Charles Boulle’s «Chariot of Apollo» armoire (c. 1700).

When Fashion Meets Form and Volume

Other designers reinterpret history more abstractly, playing with silhouettes and proportions. John Galliano’s Christian Dior 2004–05 collection, presented in the Napoleon III apartments, featured an extravagant ball gown reminiscent of Viennese court attire, yet infused with a glamorous 1950s pin-up twist. Demna, in his 2020 Balenciaga collection, blended the opulence of the Napoleon III era with the stark aesthetic of Spanish painter Diego Velázquez (1599–1660), refining the silhouette to its purest form.

Fashion as a Playful Reimagination

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac playfully juxtaposed his «Bambi» suit with the grand tapestry «The Hunts of Maximilian». Jean Paul Gaultier’s 2008–09 collection, as always, toyed with contrasts: his «cage dress» brought the hidden crinoline structure into the spotlight, reversing the traditional hierarchy between the cage and the flowing mousseline-and-sequin gown.

Beyond Fashion—Telling Stories Through Design

Each of these designs tells a story—if only one knows how to look beyond the couture piece itself.
