The culture of communication on the Internet has gotten better

The latest data from Microsoft's Digital Courtesy Index (DCI) survey shows a better communication culture on the Internet. Over the past five years, Microsoft has been actively supporting the International Safer Internet Day and conducting awareness campaigns to help create a secure online environment. This year, as well as in previous years, the study "Politeness, safety and communication on the Internet" is being conducted for this event, which assessed the perception of online life by adolescents and adults and their exposure to 21 different online risks in four categories: reputational, behavioral, sexual and personal. The lower the index value (on a scale from 0 to 100), the lower the respondents' exposure to risk and the higher the level of online politeness among the population of a particular country. Over the past five years, more than 58,000 people have participated in the study in more than 30 countries around the world.

Despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, Microsoft's global digital courtesy index is showing significant growth in 2020 from the traditionally low levels of the past four years, according to the latest report. A unifying sense of solidarity during the pandemic, as well as responsible online user interactions, in particular adolescents, contributed to the index's three-point growth to 67%.

The latest survey expanded the geography of respondents to include six additional regions for the April and May 2020 survey. Denmark, the Philippines, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and Thailand are pioneering participants. Among the new survey regions, Taiwan performed the most favorable Digital Courtesy Index score, debuting in fifth place among the 32 countries surveyed and recording a DCI score of 61%, six percentage points more favorable than the global average. Taiwan is second only to the Netherlands (51%), Great Britain (55%), the USA (56%) and Singapore (59%) in terms of its performance.

The UK, which has led the world in online courtesy for the past three years, slipped to second place in 2020, recording a virtual communication etiquette score of 55%, 10 percentage points higher than the most favorable 45% score recorded in the first 2016 survey.

The countries with the highest rates of online impoliteness included South Africa (81%), Russia (80%), and Mexico (76%). However, Russia and South Africa's scores have started to improve since 2019.
