On August 11, 2025, in Almaty, the grand finale of the 5th season of the Next Designer Award empowered by Visa brought together ten emerging talents from across Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Among them, the most striking and imaginative work came from Tomiris Talgat, whose collection “Bailau” was recognized as the winner. She received a $10,000 USD grant from Visa to create her next collection and an invitation to showcase her work at Visa Fashion Week Almaty SS2026.

Среди десяти участников из Казахстана и стран Центральной Азии наиболее яркой и смелой признали коллекцию «Байляу» Томирис Талгат. Победительница получила грант в размере 10 000 долларов США от Visa на создание новой коллекции и приглашение принять участие в Visa Fashion Week Almaty SS2026.

A New Ritual for the Modern Woman
Talgat’s “Bailau” reimagines a Kazakh female initiation rite for women who have chosen a non-traditional path in a patriarchal culture. Structured as four stages—Exile, Mourning, Rebirth, and Return—the collection becomes a journey of psychological transformation. Each piece is more than fashion: it is a symbolic “slow dress,” a ritual garment that serves as emotional armor in the fight for selfhood.

В «Байляу» Томирис переосмысляет казахский обряд женской инициации для женщин, выбравших нетрадиционный путь в патриархальной культуре. Четыре этапа — Изгнание, Оплакивание, Перерождение и Возвращение — становятся метафорой внутренней трансформации. Каждое изделие — это не просто одежда, а «slow dress», ритуал, эмоциональный доспех в борьбе за собственную идентичность.

A Dark yet Empowering Aesthetic
The collection draws from Kazakh rituals, incorporating “dark” symbols like claws, fangs, and water—elements representing the subconscious and emotional strength. Talgat reframes the “demonization” of female power as a system of control, transforming it into a narrative of resilience. Her work rejects societal roles not out of rebellion against men, but in defiance of structures that distort everyone—fathers, brothers, friends, and husbands alike.

Коллекция соединяет мотивы казахских обрядов с «тёмной» символикой: когтями, клыками и образом воды как бессознательного и силы эмоций. Томирис переосмысляет демонизацию женской силы как способ контроля и превращает её в историю устойчивости. Её работы отвергают навязанные роли не как протест против мужчин, а как сопротивление структурам, деформирующим всех — отцов, братьев, друзей и мужей.

Organized for the fifth year by Visa Fashion Week Almaty with support from Visa, the Next Designer Award has become a hub for creativity, networking, and cultural exchange. The 2025 finalists impressed the jury with originality, technical skill, and conceptual depth—proof that the fashion future of Central Asia is in talented hands.
