Knitting Kindness: The “28 Loops” Club Celebrates 13 Years of Handcrafted Hope

On July 26, in the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the Presso restaurant in Almaty, a heartfelt celebration marked the 13th anniversary of the “28 Loops” Club — a volunteer movement that has been offering warmth, literally and figuratively, to premature babies since 2012. The event brought together volunteers, doctors, partners, journalists, and everyone who believes in the power of small kind gestures.

26 июля в уютной атмосфере ресторана Presso в Алматы прошла встреча, посвящённая 13-летию клуба «28 петель» — душевного волонтёрского движения, помогающего недоношенным детям. Это была не просто дата, а настоящий праздник доброты, который объединил волонтёров, врачей, партнёров, журналистов и всех, кто верит в силу маленьких добрых дел.

How It All Began
The story began on July 29, 2012, when journalist Karla Nur published an article about neonatologists, inspiring her to post a simple call on social media: let’s knit wool socks for preemies to help them retain vital warmth.

Как всё начиналось
Всё началось 29 июля 2012 года, когда журналистка Карла Нур опубликовала материал о врачах-неонатологах и призвала в соцсетях связать носочки для недоношенных малышей, чтобы помочь сохранить тепло.

The response was immediate. Knitters from all over Kazakhstan picked up their needles, crafting tiny woolen pieces with love. What started as a humble initiative quickly grew into a movement that would unite caring hands across the post-Soviet space — becoming the first such club in the region dedicated to newborns as small as 500 grams.

Отклик был мгновенным: женщины по всей стране начали вязать носочки, шапочки, кофточки. Так родился первый в СНГ клуб, в котором участницы вяжут комплекты для младенцев весом от 500 грамм — с любовью, заботой и верой в жизнь.

Why “28 Loops”?
The name is symbolic: 28 loops is all it takes to start knitting a tiny sock for a premature newborn.

Today, the club’s volunteers knit entire sets from 100% natural wool — socks, caps, cardigans, and blankets — as well as soft cotton comfort toys to help babies feel safe and reduce stress. These handmade items are more than warmth; they improve circulation, support breathing, and provide a sense of care to both babies and their parents.

Сегодня участницы клуба вяжут не только носочки, но и целые комплекты из натуральной шерсти, а также игрушки-комфортеры из хлопка. Эти вещи помогают наладить дыхание, улучшить кровообращение и дают родителям ощущение поддержки — что они не одни.

The Club’s Mission
The “28 Loops” Club provides support to premature babies and their families by donating every knitted item to neonatal centers and maternity hospitals — free of charge.

Клуб «28 петель» оказывает поддержку недоношенным детям и их родителям. Всё, что вяжут волонтёры, бесплатно передаётся в отделения неонатологии и родильные дома по всей стране.

No medical facility in Kazakhstan has a budget for yarn — that’s why the club relies solely on the dedication of its volunteers, who often purchase the yarn themselves. The club thrives on compassion, generosity, and the gratitude of parents and medical professionals.

Ни один роддом не закупает пряжу. Поэтому клуб существует исключительно благодаря энтузиазму женщин, которые не только вяжут, но и покупают пряжу. Поддержка клуба — это и благодарность родителей, и признание медиков.

Growing into a Global Community
Over 13 years, “28 Loops” has grown into an international network:

• Present in 151 cities
• Nearly 4,000 volunteers
• Recognized with the Altyn Zhurek national award in 2017

Gaziza Uzak, coordinator of the Almaty branch, says: “This club has become a bridge between generations and regions. Knitting unites us — and gives strength to those who need it most in the earliest moments of life.”

Premature Births: Statistics and Hope
In 2024, nearly 18,000 babies were born prematurely in Kazakhstan. But survival rates have improved dramatically thanks to advances in technology — and heartfelt human support like that of the club.

В 2024 году в Казахстане родилось более 17 000 недоношенных малышей. Но уровень выживаемости растёт — и это заслуга врачей, технологий и, конечно, добрых людей.

Marina Chegaeva, another coordinator, explains: “Wool acts like a natural incubator — it regulates heat, stimulates circulation, and encourages breathing.”

Celebrating with Love
At the anniversary celebration, heartfelt speeches and inspiring stories filled the room. Notable guests included:

• TV journalist and mother of a preemie, Adel Smith
• Media manager and early club supporter, Shynar Zhanibekova
• Olympic medalist and philanthropist, Elena Khrustaleva
• Rehabilitation doctor, Shynar Malik, who said:
“Handmade woolens are more than warm — they are a stimulus for life. For mothers, it’s a gift of faith.”

Among the many guests were also corporate partners like Mary Kay, PwC, RG Brands, doctors, bloggers, and simply caring individuals — all united by compassion and craft.
