Plastic Back in Play: How EKTU Students Turn Recycled Materials into Educational Projects
Plastic Back in Play: How EKTU Students Turn Recycled Materials into Educational Projects
At D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University, recyclable waste is being transformed into material for new student projects. Plastic is collected across the campus, shredded, processed into material suitable for 3D printing, and then used to create new products.
One such project is SoRRRtify, an educational game whose cards are made from recycled plastic — a 3D-printing filament produced from PET waste directly on the university campus.
This gives students the opportunity to follow the entire journey of the material in practice — from a used plastic bottle to a finished product — while taking an active role in creating it themselves.
Ecology as Part of University Life
In East Kazakhstan, resource conservation and environmental safety are closely linked to the development of industry and technology. At EKTU, environmental initiatives have therefore become an integral part not only of the university’s community activities, but also of its educational and research agenda.
This work is being developed through the Green Campus project, which brings together several areas of activity, including waste separation, resource conservation, environmental education, student initiatives, and the development of practical solutions in the field of the circular economy.
“Our philosophy of building an environmentally responsible culture is based on the principle of ‘from theory to action,’” says Olga Petrova, Head of the Green Campus project.
Green Campus.
The university operates a resource management program that includes the separate collection of waste paper and plastic, as well as regular environmental initiatives. To encourage student participation, the university uses gamification, competitions between faculties, and various forms of recognition for those who take an active role.
Giving Plastic a Second Life with ReStart
EKTU’s participation in the ReStart environmental project marked an important stage in developing the campus waste collection infrastructure. According to university representatives, the project helped expand opportunities for working with recyclable materials.
Infrastructure alone, however, is not enough: students also need to understand what happens to waste once it has been sorted. For this reason, the university holds short interactive sessions explaining how to sort and prepare waste for further use. Students are introduced to the equipment and shown the subsequent stages of material processing.
“How can we make sorting an everyday habit for students rather than a one-off activity? We try to demonstrate the entire process in practice: students see that the plastic they collect is genuinely put to further use, become familiar with the equipment, take part in recycling, and can see the results of their own work. Once people understand what happens to the material after it goes into the recycling bin, their attitude towards sorting begins to change,” explains the team from the Office for Sustainable Development and the Green Campus project.
Green Campus.
In 2024, EKTU took second place in the ReStart project and received a polymer shredder as part of its prize. Today, the equipment is used for student projects and laboratory practicals.
The university is also developing the Recycling Inside project, which has established a step-by-step system for working with different types of recyclable materials. Recycled plastic, for example, is used to produce moulds for pressing. These moulds are then filled with paper pulp made from shredded waste paper to create seedling pots, which are subsequently used in landscaping the university campus.
Another area of development involves transforming plastic bottles into filament — the material used for 3D printing.
This infrastructure has laid the foundation for students to develop projects of their own.
To create SoRRRtify, students used recycled material produced from PET waste collected across the university campus. In this way, discarded plastic is given a practical new purpose, becoming the basis for a finished educational product.
SoRRRtify serves several purposes at once. The game promotes waste separation and helps develop environmentally responsible habits, while also giving students hands-on experience in creating their own product: they work directly with recycled material and participate in producing the finished item.
The game has officially received a copyright certificate, opening up further opportunities to develop the project in the field of student entrepreneurship.
Looking ahead, the team plans to develop SoRRRtify further and turn the game into official university merchandise.
From Participation to Student-Led Initiatives
Today, EKTU has nine environmental clubs — one at each of the university’s schools. They provide spaces where students can generate ideas, organize environmental campaigns, hold educational events, and develop their own sustainability projects.
Additional support for student initiatives is provided by the Fablab laboratory. Here, students can refine their ideas and create prototypes for future solutions — from environmental monitoring devices to products related to recycling and the reuse of materials.
In this way, environmental engagement is gradually evolving from participation in individual initiatives into the development of independent student projects. SoRRRtify is one example of how this approach works in practice.
Opportunities for Future Engineers
For a technical university, participation in projects such as ReStart has a broader significance. Environmental challenges give students an opportunity to develop systems thinking, a project-based mindset, teamwork skills, and the ability to create practical solutions.
Future engineers, researchers and managers have the opportunity to work on real-world challenges while they are still studying: mastering material recycling technologies, conducting experiments, developing prototypes, and creating products of their own.
Environmental practice thus becomes part of engineering education: students do more than simply sort waste — they see how a material travels from a discarded bottle to a new product. For the university, this is an opportunity to educate a new generation of specialists who know how to apply technology to solving real-world challenges.
