Reveries of Stone: Poetry and Minerals of Roger Caillois

From November 6, 2025, to March 29, 2026, L’École des Arts Joailliers, in partnership with the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle (MNHN), will present a retrospective dedicated to the collection of the great 20th-century French writer Roger Caillois. This exhibition juxtaposes his emblematic writings with nearly two hundred minerals he collected — now preserved at the MNHN. Conceived by Professor François Farges, the exhibition curator and scientific director of the MNHN’s gem and art object collections, the project bridges science and poetry in an unprecedented way.

Through this exhibition, L’École des Arts Joailliers explores the phantasmagorical universe of Roger Caillois (1913–1978) — one of the most brilliant and unconventional minds of the 20th century. Essayist, grammarian, and poet, Caillois devoted part of his work to defining the boundaries between nature and art. Driven by insatiable curiosity and scientific precision, he collected stones passionately for over 25 years, finding in their contemplation both inspiration and poetic power.

“Rêveries de pierres: Poésie et minéraux de Roger Caillois” immerses visitors in the intimate dialogue between the writer and the mineral world. Nearly 200 specimens — many displayed for the first time — invite reflection on Caillois’ thought, where stones converse with words.

Caillois’ journey as a collector-scholar mirrors his intellectual path. Between 1952 and 1978, he assembled an extraordinary collection of stones — “objects of passage” and “fairy objects,” as he called them — which today comprises over a thousand specimens, mostly preserved at the MNHN thanks to the patronage of L’École des Arts Joailliers. His fascination with minerals inspired his celebrated book The Writing of Stones (1970), a poetic exploration of nature’s imagery that led to his election to the Académie Française the following year.

The exhibition also unveils newly rediscovered manuscripts — including Pierres anagogiques, Caillois’ final, unfinished poetic cycle — presented alongside their corresponding stones. This publication, co-edited by L’École des Arts Joailliers and Gallimard, offers a unique insight into the metaphysical dimension of his thought, where minerals become mirrors of the human soul.

На выставке представлены и недавно найденные рукописи — включая «Анагогические камни», последний незавершённый цикл поэта, впервые представленный вместе с соответствующими минералами.
