Paris’s Palais Galliera unveils its first-ever exhibition dedicated to Rick Owens, inviting visitors on a journey through the avant-garde designer’s universe—from his early Los Angeles beginnings to his most recent, striking collections. Fascinated by the sacred, Owens reveals the layered references behind his work, drawing inspiration from Joris-Karl Huysmans, modern and contemporary art, and early 20th-century Hollywood cinema. As artistic director of the exhibition, he envisioned a narrative that extends beyond the museum’s walls to its façade and garden.

Born in California in 1961, Rick Owens began his career in Los Angeles as a pattern maker before launching his own label in 1992. Drawing from underground subcultures and the glamorous aesthetic of the 1930s, his designs stand out for their architectural sophistication. Limited resources initially led him to repurpose everyday materials—T-shirt jerseys, military bags, army blankets, washed leather—transforming them into dresses and jackets. Among his signature tones, black and muted shades dominate, including his iconic custom gray known as “dust.”

In 2003, Owens moved from Los Angeles to Paris. Independent and provocative, his runway shows often incorporate political commentary, challenging intolerance and patriarchy. He has replaced traditional models with stepping performers—African American dancers who use the body as percussion—exposed male sexuality on the runway, and celebrated the strength of women. In response to a turbulent world, his work has embraced more sculptural silhouettes and bursts of vivid color.

With over 100 silhouettes, the retrospective is enriched by Owens’s personal archives, rare videos, and newly unveiled installations. Works by Gustave Moreau, Joseph Beuys, and Steven Parrino further illuminate the designer’s inspirations, offering a fresh perspective on his creative language. The exhibition also highlights the crucial influence of his wife, Michèle Lamy, whose presence threads through the entire narrative—including a recreation of their California bedroom.

Rick Owens’s vision extends outdoors as well: the museum’s façade is draped with sequined fabrics enveloping its statues, while thirty brutalist cement sculptures installed in the garden echo his furniture creations. The flowerbeds have been replanted with botanical varieties reminiscent of Los Angeles, adding another layer of personal narrative.
