In the spring of 2026, the Musée Soulages in Rodez will present an exhibition dedicated to one of the most important photographers of our time, Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Sugimoto’s work places the notion of time at its very core — a concept equally central to Pierre Soulages, who stated in 1963 in conversation with philosopher Jean Grenier: “Time seems to me one of the concerns my painting bears witness to; it is time that stands at the center of my approach as a painter, time and its relationship with space.”

Sugimoto’s photographs also share with Soulages a profound exploration of light and shadow, a recurring formal interest in the horizon line, spatial perception, and the architectural dimension of the artwork.

The exhibition will bring together eight series spanning the entirety of the Japanese artist’s career — from the 1970s to the present day — each resonating with Soulages’ paintings in a subtle and contemplative dialogue.

This project is the result of close collaboration with the artist and his New York studio, ensuring a presentation faithful to his vision.

Deeply informed by art history, philosophical reflection on the image, and an exceptional technical mastery, Sugimoto’s photography questions the very limits and conditions of representation, hovering at the edge of a pictorial imagination.

His approach finds unexpected affinities both with traditional Japanese literati painting and with the abstract movements of the second half of the twentieth century.

Born in Tokyo in 1948, Sugimoto graduated from Saint Paul’s University in 1970 and later from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in 1974. That same year, he moved to New York, where he established his career. Since then, he has lived and worked between the United States and Japan, founding the Odawara Art Foundation in 2009, dedicated to Japanese culture and the arts.

Marked by remarkable diversity, the exhibition unfolds as a meditative promenade through the temporary exhibition galleries, with scenography conceived by the artist himself. It will also extend into selected spaces of the permanent collection, creating subtle visual correspondences.

This presentation constitutes a major event in France. While Sugimoto has been exhibited here before, previous projects have taken very different forms.

His most recent French exhibition took place in 2024 at the Institut Giacometti in Paris, presenting a dialogue with the sculptor’s work through the single series Past Presence. Earlier, his works were shown at the Château de Versailles in 2018 and at the Palais de Tokyo in 2014.
