From December 2025, the Palais Galliera inaugurates a new cycle of exhibitions dedicated to savoir-faire. Through three successive exhibitions exploring fashion professions and techniques from different perspectives, the museum highlights the richness of its collections and offers a renewed взгляд on the history of fashion from the 18th century to the present day.

This first exhibition focuses on the savoir-faire of ornamentation — weaving, printing, embroidery, lace-making, and artificial flowers — techniques that elevate and decorate garments and accessories. These crafts are explored through the theme of the flower, an essential motif in textile art and fashion since the 18th century. Its many interpretations reveal subtle plays of materials, color treatments, volumes, and motif placement, evolving with the seasons.

From an 18th-century brocaded waistcoat to laser-printed Balenciaga ensembles, from Chantilly lace to Gabrielle Chanel’s camellia, the exhibition showcases an extraordinary diversity of techniques.
At the same time, it examines their symbolism and uses, offering a dialogue between heritage craftsmanship and contemporary innovation.

Featuring over 350 works — including garments, accessories, photographs, graphic arts, samples, and tools — the exhibition path reveals creations from both haute couture houses and emerging designers.
Some pieces were created especially for the exhibition. Textile samples and magnifying tables invite visitors to observe closely, scrutinize details, and better understand the complexity of gestures behind each creation.

The Palais Galliera also pays tribute to the often-overlooked authors of these savoir-faire, frequently eclipsed by the prestigious names of couturiers. From historic houses such as Lesage or Hurel to contemporary figures like Baqué Molinié and Aurélia Leblanc, the exhibition highlights professions little known to the public: textile designers, embroiderers, feather artisans, and floral ornament makers.
