The Haute Couture 2003 collection marked the triumphant return of couturier Azzedine Alaïa (February 29, 1935, Tunis – November 18, 2017, Paris) to the official runway calendar after several years of absence.

This moment opened an entirely new chapter in the designer’s career. From his early days in Paris, working for a private clientele, to his years of global triumph in the 1980s and 1990s, Alaïa reinvented himself once again — this time pushing even further the art of cut, construction, and the sculpting of the human form.

Zippers, lacing, stretched leather, and dramatic play of volumes were still present, but everything was refined to an extreme — distilled to a point where only black, with rare exceptions, could fully magnify the effect.
