From October 2, 2025, to January 17, 2026, Galerie Roger-Viollet in Paris will present the exhibition “Gaston Paris – L’équilibre du carré”, a celebration of one of the most intriguing yet underrecognized figures in 20th-century French photography.

Gaston Paris (1903–1964) was a unique observer of his era, combining a journalist’s eye with a photographer’s aesthetic sensibility. He began his career in the 1930s, contributing to many illustrated magazines such as Vu – where he was the sole staff photographer – Regards, and Art et Médecine. He was also a member of Le Rectangle, an association of French illustrators and advertising photographers that included Emmanuel Sougez and Pierre Jahan.

His work ranged from reportage – covering the ocean liner Normandie, airplane wind tunnels in Meudon, railway workshops, and construction sites – to highly graphic compositions of urban and industrial landscapes, such as the Eiffel Tower or the backstage of the Opéra Garnier. His square format always achieved a perfect balance, filled with precision and cinematic elegance.

After his death in 1964, Agence Roger-Viollet acquired his archive of 15,000 negatives – a collection as varied as it is cohesive. Today, his photographs are preserved by the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris and distributed by the Roger-Viollet agency.
