René Lalique's Golden Legacy Reimagined: From Ancient Craft to Contemporary Understanding

In line with its mission to share knowledge and celebrate the culture of jewelry-making, L’École des Arts Joailliers presents an unprecedented research project at the intersection of archaeology and the history of craftsmanship. The exhibition is on view from July 3 to September 21, 2025, at the Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau in Paris.

One of the most remarkable projects carried out by the school is the experimental reconstruction of the Montans torque. The aim of this collaborative archaeological endeavor is to understand the ancient techniques of gold craftsmanship by reproducing a rigid Celtic gold necklace discovered in 1843 in Montans, Tarn. The piece dates back to the second Iron Age (450–25 BCE).

Целью этой археологической инициативы является понимание древних техник обработки золота путём воспроизведения жёсткого кельтского ожерелья, найденного в 1843 году в Монтансе (департамент Тарн). Оригинал датируется Вторым железным веком (450–25 гг. до н. э.).

This initiative, initially led by the Montans Archaeological Center, the National Archaeology Museum in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and CNRS research director Barbara Armbruster, was met with enthusiasm when L’École des Arts Joailliers joined the effort. It provided a rare chance to engage directly with gold as material and to rediscover ancient skills that crafted an object of astonishing complexity more than two millennia ago.

The recreation was made possible by master chaser and "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" Antoine Legouy, who collaborated with archaeologists and Van Cleef & Arpels' High Jewelry Crafts Director, Grégory Weinstock. Together, they merged academic knowledge with the intuition of the hand, bringing ancient mastery back to life.

“To think with the hand was central to the process,” said Legouy, who imagined himself in the place of the ancient craftsmen. His goal was to walk in their footsteps, to uncover forgotten gestures and recover lost methods. As exhibition curator Emmanuelle Amiot puts it, “Craftsmanship brings new dimensions to our understanding. Research cannot exist without the men and women of the métier. The intelligence of the hand completes scholarly knowledge, and vice versa.”

Throughout the exhibition, visitors can also explore the Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau itself, now home to the school since June 2024. Listed as a historical monument, the 18th-century residence offers guided tours through its ornate salons, linking jewelry with Parisian heritage.

As part of the program, round tables and public lectures will further explore the intersection between historical research and craftsmanship. After Paris, the exhibition will travel to Lyon from November 24 to 30, 2025, as part of "De Mains en mains," an event organized by Van Cleef & Arpels to celebrate the transmission of jewelry-making knowledge.

"The summer program is a tribute to craftsmanship — one of the pillars of our mission," says Élise Gonnet Pon, director of the school in France and Europe. "Alongside a pioneering research project, we open the doors of our remarkable Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau, letting visitors discover its history and architecture through the lens of savoir-faire."
