Today, we often hear about cosmetics based on olive, birch, or oak, forest baths, sylvotherapy, and tree hugging. Artists understood it all nearly two centuries ago. The Barbizon School and, in particular, the painter Théodore Rousseau (Paris, 1812 - Barbizon, 1867) noticed that their open-air studio, the Fontainebleau forest, was beginning to be overexploited due to logging campaigns. The painter denounced them with his canvas of 1847, "The Massacre of the Innocents." The beginnings of tourism (creation of blue trails, arrival of the train) did not help either.

The one who heard and listened to the voice of the trees, even creating true portraits of each one (Groups of Oaks, Apremont, Fontainebleau Forest, 1850-1852, or A Tree in the Fontainebleau Forest, 1840-49), or even dead branches on the ground, became the standard-bearer for the protection of his forest. Thus, in 1853, the world's very first artistic reserve (nature reserve) was born.

Théodore Rousseau always preferred nature to any other subjects in the line of Dutch landscapists of the 17th century, such as Meindert Hobbema (Amsterdam, 1638-1709) or the Englishman John Constable (East Bergholt, 1776-London, 1837). Instead of competing for the Prix de Rome, he traveled across France (Mont Blanc, seen from Faucille, storm effect, from 1834). Landscape, nature for itself, was not a pretext but the central point. Mixing techniques, tirelessly retouching them, his works were too often rejected at the Salon - even "Avenue of Chestnut Trees" (1825-1850), bought by the state, - he was the great refused, which paradoxically increased his reputation.

In 1847, he decided to settle in Barbizon, where he found the colony of painters Narcisse Diaz de la Peña, Jean François Millet (the painter of agricultural lands)..., sculptors, photographers. The Fontainebleau forest became the center of his creation. He tirelessly sought to be as close as possible to the effects of air and light, forms, textures, and colors. He immersed the viewer in his forest.
