Through a vocabulary that is both photographic and visual, Hélène Bellenger links the history of dominant representations to that of the transformation of the landscape. Through a work that crosses the themes of landscape and ecology in the Anthropocene era, Bianco Ordinario thus tends to question the workings of production of Western white subjectivity and its impact on the environment and collective imaginations.

It is “for all the gold in the world” that our references still remain colonized, yet “we are entering a new era” more conscious through a scene of committed artists. Continuing its programming, the Galerie Marguerite Milin presents Hélène Bellenger with her new series: Bianco Ordinario (2021-2023).

During a stroll in the Massa-Carrara region, Hélène Bellenger was struck by the whiteness of these blocks of marble, echoing that of the ice landscapes of the Ecrins National Park on which she had just worked. Sculpted for centuries for its immaculate pantone and quality, the stone highly prized by artists and designers is now overexploited for the extraction of Carrara marble powder. This real calcium carbonate is present to whiten our consumer products such as boxes of disposable tissues, paper, yogurts or even toothpaste. The artist is part of this new scene of visual artists who deconstruct matter in the manner of molecular art.

Hélène Bellenger, through this series of images with industrial shapes, offers a secular journey. The spectator finds himself immersed in a rediscovered time of photographic archives on a black background. It was then a matter of “bringing the marble down from the quarries to Carrara”. Finally, a contemporary time, with forms printed negatively on cardboard packaging which offers a new look at the environment, and highlights the disappearance of man from the landscape. In addition to the unemployment induced by this circular economy, we are facing a pure ecological disaster: La Marmettola sediments the rivers and creates repeated floods. Health is also impacted since there is a higher rate of lung cancer. The artist involved with local and militant associations (ex: Legambiante) carried out a profound work of investigation... The allegory of his work continues the movement until the acidity of the cardboard which will continue to attack the ink from the photographic print. In the same way, the landscape gradually disappears, like the remains of a single decomposing image, or a window on the backstage of the work. A certain nostalgia emerges from the chromatic choice of Hélène Bellenger. Faded colors recall autochrome photography and link these two times thus forming part of a new historiography: A critical look at the industrial future of these landscapes is at the service of the always "whiter than white" of our daily life, another derives from colonial capitalism.
