The project is based at M. Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University. Its official launch took place in Petropavlovsk with the participation of the ambassadors of the United Kingdom and Sweden, representatives of the North Kazakhstan regional administration, AstraZeneca, the Just Support Public Foundation and the university.

Over the course of a year, students will take part in educational activities and initiatives dedicated to the prevention of cardiovascular, respiratory and oncological diseases, diabetes and other non-communicable conditions.

Particular attention will be paid to major risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, insufficient physical activity, unbalanced nutrition and exposure to air pollution. The programme is designed to give participants practical knowledge and skills that can help them make more informed choices about their own health and promote a culture of prevention among their peers and communities.

Svetlana Bogatyreva, Executive Director of the Just Support Foundation, emphasised that working with young people has long been one of the organisation’s priorities. According to her, the aim is not simply to talk about health, but to help young people understand how everyday habits and decisions can shape their quality of life today and in the future. She also highlighted the importance of combining the programme’s international expertise with the specific needs of young people in Kazakhstan and the country’s educational environment.

M. Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University has become the first platform for the Young Health Programme in Kazakhstan. Rector Yerbol Issakayev noted that a university is not only a place for academic learning, but also an environment where young people develop their attitudes towards their own health. The partnership is expected to combine international expertise with the university’s resources and encourage students to become advocates for healthier lifestyles within their communities.

Elena Trogova, General Director of AstraZeneca Kazakhstan, described the launch of YHP in the country as an important step in the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable healthcare development. By investing in the knowledge, skills and initiatives of young people, the programme aims to encourage greater awareness of personal health from an early age and help reduce the risks associated with non-communicable diseases.

The launch in Kazakhstan forms part of the global expansion of the Young Health Programme. AstraZeneca has announced that its total investment in YHP between 2010 and 2030 will exceed US$100 million, supporting health equity initiatives across more than 60 countries.

Since its launch, the programme has directly reached 23 million young people in more than 60 countries, while over one million participants have completed YHP training. Young advocates involved in the initiative have also contributed to the development and adoption of 29 laws and public policy measures.

Non-communicable diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide, and many of the behaviours associated with their development begin during adolescence and early adulthood. This makes prevention at a young age one of the key priorities of public health — and places education, awareness and everyday choices at the heart of long-term change.
