Dual-Site Exhibition at the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà, Venice, and Long Museum, Shanghai (2026)

Renowned artist Wallace Chan will unveil Vessels of Other Worlds, his most ambitious and visceral project to date, in a landmark dual-site exhibition across Venice and Shanghai in 2026, coinciding with his 70th birthday. Curated by James Putnam, this major exhibition introduces a striking new series of monumental titanium sculptures, expanding both the spatial and conceptual dimensions of Chan’s practice.

Following the success of his three previous exhibitions during the Venice Biennale — Titans (2021), Totem (2022) at Fondaco Marcello, and the Transcendence (2024) soundscaped by Brian Eno at the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà, which attracted over 30,000 visitors in just three months — Vessels of Other Worlds marks a bold new chapter in the artist’s oeuvre.

The first exhibition opens on 8 May 2026 at the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà, coinciding with the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The second, parallel exhibition will open at the Long Museum, Shanghai, on 18 July 2026.

In Venice, three titanium sculptures inspired by Olea Sancta—the three sacred oils used in Catholic rituals—will be displayed on the chapel’s altar. A triptych of video screens will serve as a secret portal, revealing the monumental counterparts on view in Shanghai. These fantastical forms, symbolising birth, growth, and death, draw inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. Suspended titanium elements will resemble floating drops of oil, infusing the chapel with a sense of movement and transcendence.

В Венеции будут представлены три титаново́е скульптуры, вдохновлённые Olea Sancta — тремя святыми маслами, используемыми в католических обрядах благословения. На алтаре капеллы разместится видео-триптих, который станет «порталом» к их монументальным двойникам в Шанхае. Эти фантастические формы, символизирующие рождение, рост и смерть, навеяны «Садом земных наслаждений» Иеронима Босха. Вокруг центральных работ парящие титаново́е элементы создадут ощущение текучести и преображения.

At the Long Museum in Shanghai, visitors will encounter the same vessels, magnified to heights of seven, eight, and ten metres. The central sculpture will invite audiences to step inside and explore its kaleidoscopic interior, featuring mirrored apertures inspired by Chan’s signature gemstone-cutting technique, the Wallace Cut. Works from his earlier Venice exhibitions—Transcendence, Titans, and Totem—will also be shown, connecting both cities in a shared artistic dialogue.

“Both Venice and Shanghai are tied to water — its shifting states and its power to hold, reflect, and transform,” says Chan. “These vessels are containers of memory and spirit, sculpted in titanium — a material closest to eternity. Like water, they hold what cannot be held: moments, emotions, and time itself.”
