RIBA Announces the Winners of Its Inaugural Middle East Architecture Awards

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the nine winning projects of its first-ever RIBA Middle East Awards, celebrating architectural innovation and excellence across the region. The winners will be officially honored on November 7 during Dubai Design Week.

This year’s selection showcases the creativity, ambition, and diversity of Middle Eastern architecture — from civic spaces that inspire to sustainable environments for learning and community. The awarded projects illustrate how design continues to reshape the region’s urban and cultural landscape.

Among the most remarkable is the world’s first women-only mosque in Qatar, a symbol of equality and innovation that reimagines worship spaces as centers for education and empowerment. In Riyadh, the King Salman Park transforms a former airport into the world’s largest urban park — a green revolution in the desert.

In Dubai, a newly designed secondary school demonstrates how sustainable architecture can foster modern education and environmental awareness. Meanwhile, the Expo 2020 site evolves into a vibrant cultural plaza — a lasting testament to community and creativity.

Each winning project is rooted in context, culture, and heritage, harmonizing modern needs with local identity. The Buhais Geology Park in Sharjah’s desert stands out for its shell-like pavilions inspired by fossilized sea urchins — a poetic fusion of science and landscape.

Spanning the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, the awarded projects demonstrate the region’s global reach and architectural excellence, featuring collaborations with renowned studios such as Diller Scofidio + Renfro (USA), Hopkins Architects (UK), and WOHA (Singapore).

Kerem Cengiz, Jury Chair for the Middle East Awards, noted:
“The winners reflect the Middle East’s evolving identity — balancing tradition and progress while addressing climate, culture, and community.”

The RIBA Middle East Awards Ceremony will take place during Dubai Design Week, on Friday, November 7, from 7 to 9 PM at Atrium 6, Dubai Design District (d3). The event will feature Dr. Valerie Vaughan-Dick, RIBA CEO, and Kerem Cengiz, along with jury presentations and award showcases.
