As every year, to illustrate the month of white, Le Bon Marché entrusts an artist with its windows (rue de Sèvres side), its central windows and its exhibition space on the 2nd floor to an artist. In 2023, it will be the Indian artist Subodh Gupta. From the outside we recognize the unique style of this plastic artist born in 1964 in Khafaul, a city in the state of Bihar (one of the poorest in India) and from the Academy of Fine Arts in New Delhi. Very quickly, he chooses aluminum and stainless steel kitchen utensils as his favorite material, everyday consumer items whose brilliance makes them fall into luxury. His installations not only refer to his passion for food and the ritual of meals, but also to religious beliefs and the highly developed system of offerings in India. Beyond that, it is indeed a certain denunciation of the famine which still affects a large part of the population."The utensils are simple objects, yet amalgamated all together they speak to my mind of life's complicated textures, shades, lines and shadows as seen in the palms of our hands"
