Paris, Capital of the Pearl organized by L’École des Arts Joailliers

Paris, Capital of the Pearl

Who doesn’t recognize the allure of pearls, treasured since ancient times and a source of inspiration for the world’s greatest jewelers? Yet few know about the fascinating chapter of history when pearls became central to a thriving trade between the Arabian-Persian Gulf and France from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Fewer still remember how pearls influenced the luxury industry and Parisian culture during this period.

The exhibition “Paris, Capital of the Pearl”, organized by L’École des Arts Joailliers, unravels this forgotten saga from November 21, 2024, to June 1, 2025. It sheds light on the years between the 1860s and the 1930s, a time when most pearls fished from the Gulf made their way to Paris. Sold and crafted into exquisite jewelry by the renowned jewelers of Place Vendôme, these pearls became a symbol of opulence. Historical records—account books, telegrams, photographs, and archives—reveal the scale of this trade. Land, sea, and later air routes connected the Gulf’s “Pearl Coast” to France, forging economic growth, cultural exchanges, and global fortunes.

Beyond highlighting this shared history, the exhibition explores how natural pearls and cultured pearls (introduced to France in the 1920s) inspired not only jewelers but also broader artistic expressions. This "pearl mania" influenced opera, cinema, painting, photography, and design, cementing the pearl’s symbolic status during the Roaring Twenties.

Blending history, art, and science, the exhibition delves into the mysteries of the pearl as a biomineral. It features nearly 100 jewelry pieces and 50 drawings and archival materials from distinguished lenders, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Petit Palais, and private collections such as Albion Art. Supported by Van Cleef & Arpels, L’École des Arts Joailliers, founded in 2012, furthers its mission to promote the heritage of jewelry through exhibitions, research, and public education.

This celebration of the pearl trade underscores L’École’s dedication to enriching the field of jewelry culture and knowledge.
