Paris, Capitale de la Perle: L’École des Arts Joailliers avec le soutien de Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef & Arpels

By Claude Lisbona

Placing a pearl in the mouth of the deceased to ensure a smooth passage through the underworld in China, gifting a pearl necklace to a young girl as a symbol of purity, or consuming pearl powder to strengthen one’s health—pearls have been used since Antiquity (as described by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History) and even in the Neolithic era.

The Timeless Allure of Pearls

Various mollusks are capable of producing natural pearls—iridescent or porcelain-like—in a range of colors from white to black, gold to orange. Pearls have always inspired artists, from Georges Bizet’s opera The Pearl Fishers to Georges Barbier’s advertisements (1882–1932). However, pearls truly became a symbol of the Roaring Twenties. Paris was home to countless pearl merchants (over 300 were located on Rue Lafitte), including the famous Leonard Rosenthal (1874–1955), who bypassed Indian intermediaries, and Jacques Cartier (1884–1941), who sought direct access to the Bahraini pearl market. Buyers would go to great lengths for a perfectly matched pearl necklace, sometimes taking two generations to assemble. Cartier famously traded a multi-strand pearl necklace for his Fifth Avenue mansion in New York, marking his entry into the U.S. market.

Pearls Through Artistic Eras

Jewelers followed the evolving trends of their times. During Art Nouveau, they recreated nature: for example, the Iris Flower brooch by Georges Fouquet or Henri Vever’s corsage with elongated baroque pearl petals. During Art Deco, clean lines prevailed, as seen in Van Cleef & Arpels’ tassels on long necklaces.  After a period of decline, when cultured pearls flooded the market and their image appeared outdated, designers rediscovered pearls with joy. From Fred’s Fredy’s figurines to JAR’s Sheep’s Head clip or Cactus brooches, pearls were given a fresh perspective. Modern designs such as Tasaki’s 5 Pearls rings, Antonio Seijo’s earrings, or Theodoros’ feather brooch highlight the renewed relevance of pearls in contemporary jewelry.
