The 7th Season of Next Designer Award empowered by Visa in Tashkent: A New Chapter for Emerging Central Asian Designers
The 7th Season of Next Designer Award empowered by Visa in Tashkent: A New Chapter for Emerging Central Asian Designers
Founded in 2023, the international Next Designer Award empowered by Visa has evolved in just three years from a local initiative into one of Central Asia’s leading professional platforms supporting emerging fashion talent. The project was conceived as a bridge between a designer’s first sketches and the realities of the fashion industry. Today, it provides an effective ecosystem for discovering new names and helping local designers enter the global fashion landscape.
In 2026, the fashion industry increasingly demands practical solutions capable of transforming creative ideas into commercially successful projects. Visa Fashion Week is taking the next step: after six seasons in Almaty, the Next Designer Award empowered by Visa is expanding its geography. For the first time, the final of its seventh season was held in Tashkent, in partnership with the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF).
The move reflects the natural evolution of the regional market. For several seasons, Tashkent has established itself as a major hub for the creative industries and as the host city of Visa Fashion Week. Bringing the Next Designer Award final to Uzbekistan connects two of Central Asia’s largest fashion markets within a single ecosystem and creates new opportunities for the emergence of globally competitive brands.
“By launching Next Designer Award empowered by Visa, we set ourselves the goal of systematically investing in the development of the creative economy across Central Asia. For the industry, it is first and foremost a strategic instrument that opens a genuine path for young talent, providing emerging designers with a strong professional foundation, mentorship, and financial resources for a confident start,” says Bauyrzhan Shadibekov, CEO of Next Designer Award empowered by Visa.
Next Designer Award empowered by Visa.
“The fact that we have successfully held Visa Fashion Week in Tashkent for several seasons has demonstrated that Uzbekistan is a powerful center for the creative fashion industry. Hosting the seventh season of Next Designer Award empowered by Visa here is a deliberate step. Our goal remains unchanged: to remove boundaries between creativity and business and give every talented designer a genuine opportunity to grow from a local newcomer into a strong, internationally competitive brand,” Shadibekov adds.
Partnership with the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF)
The final of the seventh season in Tashkent was held in partnership with the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF). The season’s program also incorporated Gozar of Artisans, a space established at the initiative of ACDF that brings together masters of traditional Uzbek crafts and contemporary designers. Presenting a collection at this venue gave one of the competition finalists an opportunity to place her work within the context of Uzbekistan’s rich artisanal heritage.
The Mission of Next Designer Award empowered by Visa: Shaping a New Creative Reality
Миссия Next Designer Award empowered by Visa: формируя новую креативную реальность
Next Designer Award empowered by Visa is driven by a broader mission to transform the region’s fashion industry. Rather than simply providing a stage for creative expression, the initiative builds an ecosystem for a new generation of designers, supporting them throughout the entire journey—from their earliest sketches to entering the international market.
Winners receive a $10,000 grant from Visa, providing a financial foundation for launching or scaling their brands. Yet the project’s support extends far beyond funding. Finalists are given opportunities to participate in Visa Fashion Week, while mentorship from leading industry experts helps them refine their brand DNA. International media exposure—from Vogue to ELLE—helps transform emerging talent into global recognition, while commercial integration introduces designers to concept stores and premium retail spaces.

Retrospective: 20 Creative Statements
Another major highlight of the evening was the opening of an extensive retrospective exhibition, conceived as a living dialogue between the past, present, and future of Central Asian fashion. Open until September 15, the exhibition brings together landmark works by participants from previous seasons, tracing their professional evolution from emerging talents to designers shaping the region’s contemporary aesthetic.
Through their collections, the designers explore cultural identity, reinterpret the heritage of Central Asia, and address environmental and sustainability issues. Fashion here moves beyond consumption to become a powerful medium for artistic and social expression.
Among the works presented is Inara Sarniyazova’s “Combination of Contradictions” (Season VI), a satirical exploration of Kazakhstan’s social identity that juxtaposes the scars of the past, ancestral crafts, and contemporary sports codes, allowing contradictions to find unexpected harmony.
Asal Sharopova’s “ROOTS” (Season VI) explores the connection with one’s origins through a contemporary reinterpretation of Uzbek miniature painting, architecture, ornamentation, silhouettes, and artisanal techniques.
Asal Sharopova, «ROOTS» (Season VI) —
Season IV winners Mariya Nesterova and Dmitry Khalitov presented “Tears of Kazakhstan,” an environmental manifesto exploring the fragility of nature and human-induced destruction through the concept of the element of air and the problem of atmospheric pollution in Almaty. Galima Sapar’s “Summit” reflects on personal growth and overcoming inner boundaries, with sculptural silhouettes inspired by mountain ranges and textures made from recycled materials serving as metaphors for lived experience.
Other projects turn to personal and cultural memory. Mari Airapetyan’s “URMIA” traces Armenian family history back to the 17th century through sacred symbolism, arcane-inspired silhouettes, and carpet motifs. Akmaral Zharaskyzy’s “Ma no Sō” approaches clothing as a space for cultural memory through the Japanese concepts of Ma, Kasane, and Mitate. Aizada Balabekova’s “Qara Daly” reinterprets Central Asian archetypes through the balance between the image of a strong, independent woman and the acceptance of vulnerability.
The retrospective also addresses deeply personal and social themes. Meerim Naizabekova’s “BALANCE” searches for inner stability in an unstable world, while Rassul Sotsial’s “Bullying — Traces of the Past” transforms a personal experience of bullying into a story of self-acceptance. Season I winner Assel Abdimanap’s “SOS: water” raises awareness of Kazakhstan’s endangered water ecosystems, including the Aral Sea, Caspian Sea, Balkhash, and Taldykol.
Rassul Sotsial, «Bullying — Traces of the Past»превращает личный опыт преодоления травли в историю принятия себя.
Season V winner Tomiris Talgat’s “Bailau” is a deeply personal tribute to the women in her family: in contrast to the traditional shezhire, which historically preserves male names, the dress is hand-embroidered with the names of the designer’s mothers and great-grandmothers across seven generations. Assem Sapargali’s “Şimai”, winner of Season II, explores personal transformation and the search for identity, while Season III winner Aiken Derbissaliyeva reflects on self-discovery and nomadic heritage through silhouettes inspired by archival photographs of Kazakhs from the 19th century.
Environmental memory returns in Moldir Aldazharova’s “ARAL,” a tribute to the designer’s native Aral region expressed through salt-like textures and images of sand dunes. Nigina Negmatova’s project takes a more ironic approach, examining compulsive consumption and our attachment to possessions, while Akbota Kassymbek’s “Kökpar” offers a contemporary interpretation of Kazakh culture through the dynamic energy and competitive spirit of the traditional national game.
Akbota Kapsalan’s “Qara Qandyagash” explores ancestral memory and generational continuity through the philosophy of Zheti Ata and the resilience of the steppe ecosystem. Season VI winner YES YES deconstructs collective memory in “BITPEYTIN TOY,” finding the sacred in familiar details of the Kazakh toi and bringing nostalgia into dialogue with the language of high fashion.
Completing the retrospective, Almas Kerimbek’s “KENES” examines history through fashion, contrasting an oppressive dictatorship that erases individuality with the intellectual light of the early 20th-century Kazakh intelligentsia, who fought for independence through knowledge and culture. Sabina Zhusipbaeva’s “SANDS OF MEMORY” pays homage to the cultural memory of ancient Turkestan, the legacy of the Great Silk Road, and the philosophy of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi.
