Atmosphere is everything.

You can grill shashlik even on bare ground, but the details really set the mood. A brightly colored folding mat transforms a gathering on the grass into a vibrant picture. Don't forget the family selfie!

If you're traveling with a large group, bring several mats and overlap them to create one large dastarkhan (tablecloth) on the grass. After the picnic, fold the mat into a small bag with a handle—easy to store for next time (instead of crumpling it up like regular mats).

Tumblers with straws prevent spills and are a great help with children. And for especially hot days, bring some ice from home (you can even bring it in a plastic container); it will travel perfectly in the insulated bag. Add ice cubes to juice, tea, or water—it's a refreshing boost from the scorching sun.

What you can't do without

Charcoal and disposable plates are the basics; people usually remember to bring them. But they start thinking about how to fan the grill in the blink of an eye. Use a regular hand fan—it'll both fan the coals and blow on you in calm weather. Choose a brightly colored one so you don't lose it.

Foil is a key tool, always useful outdoors. For example: covering food, wrapping potatoes for the coals, or wrapping drink cans to protect them from the sun. And, of course, wet wipes. Even if there's a river or lake nearby, it's safer to wipe your child's hands or toys with clean wipes.

While the shashlik is cooking

The longest part of a picnic is the wait, and that's where kids are the first to give in. Small equipment is a lifesaver; you can buy it all at once at Fix Price: beach tennis or badminton, glow shuttlecocks for playing in the dark, a large can of soap bubbles. And the kids' favorite: a water pistol. It's inexpensive and the whole family can get involved.

Adults, on the other hand, will love floating on an inflatable mattress—no paddling required, just a relaxing moment. It's a great antidepressant after a busy week.
